Finding time to get the exercise you need

As I find myself with less structured time due to a slow down in my patient volume, I realize that I’m not keeping up with my physical activities as easily. This week, I started working out with my college age child in my home — it’s been fun and allows us to laugh as I am definitely struggling to keep up!

Many of us are finding ourselves living in home isolation, where we work from home, supervise schooling for our kids, struggle to learn new skills when it comes to working virtually, and are unable to continue with our normal gym activities. It would be easy to say, “Oh well, that will have to wait,” but in reality, exercise could be the very thing that provides us with some ability to cope with our new “normal”. But without our favorite gym, what can we do? We had places to go and routines to follow.

I, too, struggled to find replacements for my routine and started to explore some resources available to most of us via the internet. Luckily, I found a treasure chest full of them! First, though, let’s review why exercise is important. Research tells us that exercise for all ages has verifiable benefits. This figure from the Move Your Way Campaign by the US Department of Health and Human Services outlines just a few benefits of physical activity. Check it out!

Exercise has the ability to help reduce our stress, improve energy levels, improve our sleep, cognition, and bone health as well as lower our risk for a variety of different diseases. In the midst of this pandemic, when we are faced with loss of social networks, loss of financial security, loss of family security and worst, the possibility of the loss of a family member, finding a positive way to cope is vital. Getting the right amount of exercise everyday while we adjust to our new “normal” will ultimately help to provide the tools we need to survive our “losses”.

I want to encourage each of you to consider treating yourself to the positive benefits of regular exercise. The US Department of Health and Human Services has developed the Move your Way Campaign that I will be featuring over the next few weeks to help you find ways to spend time with your family and stay active.
